Welcome to the Ulster Heritage mtDNA Project

The Ulster Heritage mtDNA Project is for mitochondrial DNA only and both male and females may participate. You inherit your mitochondrial DNA from your mother, and she from her mother, so this project focuses only on the maternal lines that are in Ulster and descend from Ulster folk in the Diaspora. Therefore, the special focus of this project is to connect our female ancestors through their mitochondrial DNA.

Ulster is a province in historical Ireland, today three counties of Ulster are in the Republic of Ireland and six are in Northern Ireland which is a part of the United Kingdom. The counties are Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry (also called Londonderry), Down, Donegal, Fermanagh, Monaghan, and Tyrone. The UH mtDNA Project and the UH DNA Project accepts participants whose ancestors are from any of the nine counties of Ulster.

If you are researching your Paternal Ulster line, please join Ulster Heritage DNA Project. The UHDP uses Y-chromosome testing, which is passed from father to son and for this reason is only open to men only.
